Who I Am
About Okunola
I work in the space between three things that don't usually share a job description: a university lecture theatre, a production AI system processing real financial transactions, and a mentoring conversation with someone trying to break into the field. Most days involve some combination of all three.
That combination isn't an accident. I think research that never leaves the page is only half-finished, and industry work that never feeds back into how the next generation is taught is a missed opportunity. So I've built a career that deliberately keeps moving between the two.

My Journey
An academic and industry timeline
The route here wasn't linear — a scholarship-funded BSc in Nigeria, three further degrees across two countries, eight years teaching and researching at Adekunle Ajasin University, and a parallel decade spent building things: fraud-detection systems, biometric verification frameworks, and now an AI product at a fintech startup I co-founded. Switch between the tabs below to follow the academic and industry threads separately, or see how leadership and community work runs alongside both.

Research Philosophy
Research that survives contact with reality
I don't think of a research contribution as finished when a paper is accepted. My PhD work on adaptive credit-card fraud detection only became interesting to me once it had to survive contact with real transaction data, in a system where the population trying to defeat it was adapting in real time. That's the standard I now hold research to: does it still work when the assumptions it was built on start to shift.
Concept drift is the thread that runs through almost everything I work on — fraud, biometric verification, even the Lassa fever prediction research funded through a TETFund NRF grant — because in each case, the phenomenon being modelled doesn't hold still. I'm drawn to problems where a model's first evaluation number is the least interesting thing about it, and where the harder, more useful question is what happens to that number six months into deployment.
That's also why responsible AI isn't a separate research interest for me so much as a constraint on all the others: a fraud system that can't explain a weight change to a compliance reviewer, or a biometric framework that degrades unevenly across populations, hasn't actually solved the problem it was built for.
Teaching & Mentoring Philosophy
Closing the gap between training and practice
On teaching
My teaching is grounded in the belief that complex technical knowledge becomes most meaningful when students can connect it directly to real-world problems. I design learning experiences that move beyond passive instruction — using industry case studies, live datasets, Jupyter-based lab workflows, and peer collaboration to build analytical thinking alongside technical proficiency. I aim to close the gap between academic training and professional practice, ensuring graduates are not just theoretically equipped but confidently deployable.
I place particular emphasis on inclusive, evidence-based pedagogy: adapting delivery to diverse learner backgrounds — particularly for international postgraduate cohorts — providing timely, constructive feedback, and maintaining high academic standards without sacrificing student accessibility.
On mentoring
I mentor the way I teach: start from where someone actually is, connect every skill to a real problem, and give feedback that's honest enough to be useful. My own path went through a state scholarship, three degrees on two continents, and a career that moves between the lecture theatre and production AI systems — so I mentor people who are navigating similarly non-linear routes into data, AI, and research.
Learn about mentoring with me →Leadership & Community
Beyond the lab and the lecture theatre
Leadership, for me, has mostly meant showing up for structures other people depend on: coordinating curriculum quality and staff development as Head of Team (Computing) at QAHE, serving as a School Governor at Ruskin Infant School, and founding Techaxle.ng, an online community supporting data scientists, analysts, and researchers in Nigeria.
None of that is separate from the mentoring work — a community, a governance role, and a research-supervision relationship are all, in different ways, about making a system work better for the people inside it than it would if left alone.
